One of the things that makes Pilates unique is that it is a complete system. One thing that we say at Yin Yang Pilates a lot is that Joseph Pilates gave us so many different pieces of equipment so that we could really get the exercises in our bodies. Sometimes an exercise just doesn’t click. Maybe you’re not making the right connections, or you’re struggling to feel what the exercise is supposed to do. That’s where the different pieces of Pilates equipment become so valuable.
Pilates Includes More Than Just the Reformer
Many people are surprised to learn how much equipment exists within the Pilates system. In addition to the Reformer and the mat, Pilates also includes:
- The Cadillac
- The Chair/Arm
- The Barrels (Spine Corrector, C-Shaper, Ladder Barrel, Small Barrel)
- The Ped-o-Pull
- The Foot Corrector
- The Neck Stretcher
- Joe’s Toe Gizmo
- Push-up Devices
- Sand Bag
- Magic Circle
- Guillotine
- Wunda, Chair
Each piece of equipment was designed to help people understand movement, build strength, improve alignment, and feel Pilates exercises more deeply in their bodies.
Pilates Equipment Helps You Learn Exercises in Different Ways
The beauty of Pilates is that we can take the same exercise and do it on different pieces of equipment. For example, we can practice Swan on different apparatuses depending on what your body needs. Sometimes a little extra support helps you lift and find the movement more easily.

Each piece of equipment offers a different experience, allowing you to understand the exercise from a new perspective.
The Cadillac Provides Stability
One of the biggest differences between the Reformer and the Cadillac is that the Cadillac doesn’t move.

You can do many of the same exercises on the Cadillac that you do on the Reformer, but because the equipment is stable, it often helps clients make connections that may be harder to find on a moving surface.
Exercises such as:
- Leg Springs (only done on the Cadillac or Tower)
- Arm Springs (only done on the Cadillac or Tower)
- Coordination
- The Rowing Series
- Frogs & Circles
- Swan
- Mermaid
can all be performed on the Cadillac.
Because the Cadillac is stationary, some people find it easier to focus on proper movement patterns and muscle engagement before taking those same exercises back to the Reformer.
Standing Variations Can Create New Awareness
Sometimes changing your position entirely can make a huge difference. At the studio, you will often see us taking clients to standing for exercises like Shave and Hug. When you’re sitting cross-legged on the Reformer and the carriage is moving, these exercises can feel challenging. Standing allows you to really feel all the muscles engaging and understand how the movement is supposed to work. Once those connections are established, it often becomes easier to perform the exercise on the Reformer.
The Ladder Barrel Offers Unique Benefits
The Ladder Barrel is another piece of equipment that provides opportunities to experience exercises differently.
Because Yin Yang Pilates only has one Ladder Barrel, it doesn’t appear often in group classes, though it may be incorporated into intermediate and advanced classes and is frequently used during private sessions.

One example is the Big Swan. The Big Swan can be very difficult on the Reformer and can sometimes be uncomfortable for people’s legs. On the Ladder Barrel, however, clients can experience the movement in a way that feels more natural and supported. Once they understand the movement and develop the proper connections, they may then try it on the Reformer.
Why Different Equipment Matters
Using different pieces of equipment isn’t about making exercises harder. It’s about helping each person find the movement in a way that works for their body. When one version of an exercise doesn’t quite click, another piece of equipment may provide the support, feedback, or challenge needed to make everything come together.
That’s one of the reasons Pilates has remained so effective for more than a century—it gives instructors many different ways to help clients succeed.
