Why Class Size Matters in Pilates

One question we hear often from new clients is:

“I’ve taken pilates at a larger studio before, and there were exercises we weren’t allowed to do. Will I be able to do them here?”

The answer is: possibly, yes.

At Yin Yang Pilates & Yoga, our Pilates reformer classes are intentionally small. We have six reformers, which means most classes are six people or fewer.

That smaller class size allows our instructors to truly watch your movement, give hands-on guidance, and make sure your body is ready for more advanced exercises.

Why Some Pilates Studios Limit Certain Exercises

In larger Pilates classes, instructors may have 10–12 or more people to monitor at once. Because of that, some studios avoid teaching certain classical Pilates exercises simply because they can’t safely keep eyes on everyone at all times.

Often it just comes down to:

  • Safety
  • Class size
  • Instructor visibility
  • Making sure clients have the right strength and connections first

Small Pilates Classes Allow for More Individual Attention

At Yin Yang Pilates & Yoga, our small group format gives instructors the ability to:

  • Closely monitor form
  • Provide modifications when needed
  • Help clients progress safely
  • Teach exercises that may not be offered in larger studio settings

As long as your body is ready, you have the proper connections, and you can safely perform the movement, you may be introduced to exercises you haven’t experienced before.

Are Private Pilates Sessions Better for Advanced Exercises?

Sometimes, yes.

If there are specific exercises you really want to learn—or movements that are considered more advanced—private Pilates sessions can be the best option.

Private sessions allow instructors to:

  • Focus entirely on your body and movement patterns
  • Progress exercises more intentionally
  • Provide individualized cueing and support
  • Help you build strength and confidence safely

For many clients, private Pilates sessions are a great way to deepen their practice and work toward more advanced classical Pilates exercises.

Pilates Should Meet You Where You Are

At Yin Yang Pilates & Yoga, we believe Pilates should challenge you appropriately while still supporting your body.

Whether you’re brand new to Pilates or have years of experience, our goal is to help you move well, build strength, and continue progressing safely.

How quickly you advance depends on:

  • Your individual body
  • Your strength and stability
  • Your consistency
  • Your movement patterns
  • And your instructor’s assessment

There’s no rush — and not “one-size-fits-all” approach.
