What is pilates?

Pilates has been around for more than 100 years. It is a core-based, mind-body exercise method created by Joseph Pilates during World War I. It is a low-impact, full-body workout that focuses on strength, alignment, breath, and control—helping you move better, feel stronger, and stay balanced in your body.

What Makes Pilates Different From Other Workouts?

Pilates is low-impact—but don’t let that fool you. It’s one of the most effective ways to build strength, improve mobility, and truly understand how your body moves.

What makes Pilates different is its focus on how you move, not just how much.

Instead of powering through reps or lifting heavier weights, Pilates emphasizes:

  • controlled, intentional movement
  • deep core engagement
  • proper alignment and posture
  • a strong mind-body connection

This means you’re not just working your muscles—you’re training them to work correctly.

Many traditional workouts target large, surface-level muscles. Pilates goes deeper, strengthening the stabilizing muscles that support your spine, improve posture, and help prevent injury.

The result?

A body that feels stronger, more balanced, and more connected—not just during your workout, but in your everyday life.

And when you add equipment into the mix (like we do at Yin Yang), that precision and support goes even further—giving you a workout that’s both highly effective and tailored to you.

What Are the Benefits of Pilates?

There are numerous benefits of Pilates. While everyone comes to Yin Yang for different reasons, here are some of the common benefits our clients experience:

  • Increase flexibility and joint mobility
  • Support weight loss goals
  • Enhance athletic performance
  • Improve posture
  • Improve circulation
  • Decrease back pain
  • Post-rehabilitation of injuries
  • Post-rehabilitation from surgery
  • Experience more fluid, efficient movement

Is Pilates Good for Beginners?

Absolutely. It’s also effective for people of all ages—you are never “too old” or “too out of shape” to begin.

At Yin Yang Pilates & Yoga, we’ve created a space that supports every level. We offer small group classes, private sessions, and semi-private sessions (you and a friend or partner), allowing you to choose what feels most comfortable.

With over 500 exercises in the Pilates system, we choose movements that are appropriate for your body, experience, and goals—so you feel confident and supported from the start.
